Of Air Conditioners and Oysters

How much does a thermostat cost?

December 22, 2010

Dear Hank,

Okay here it is the first full day of winter and my air conditioner is freezing up. I got one of those heat pump thingees and a year or so ago I discovered bands of ice around the thing. It was thick enough that the fan was hitting them. I figured this was not a good situation and called my A/C man who agreed with me and fixed it.

Well, it happened again the other day so I called him. He told me to run the unit on emergency heat until he could get over to it on Monday. When Monday came and went I called him again and left another message. Well, he finally got over here late on Wednesday and determined it was a bad thermostat on the defrost cycle.

Seeing as I was all out of such thermostats and he had one sitting on the dashboard of his truck we decided it would be a good thing for him to go ahead and put ‘er in, which we did. Well, I watched.

No sooner had he finished up then a buddy of his pulled up in a pick up truck. The fellow had oysters which my AC man had bought a bushel. I bought a bushel too. How could you turn it down? Harvested this morning. Man. Um.

He didn’t know what the cost of the thermostat was. He’d have to let me know tomorrow. We discussed oysters and the like. Then he left and I realized I didn’t have any beer. You gotta have beer with oysters. So I went to the corner store and got a six pack of Coronas, went up on the deck to watch sunset, drink a beer and shuck some oysters. Got some ketchup and sandwich spread horseradish sauce, which I mixed together for a cocktail sauce, called you up so you could hear the sounds of air conditioner repair as I opened the first beer, shucked the first oyster and slurped it down.

I don’t know how much this air conditioner job is going to cost but the beer and the oysters already took me to over fifty bucks, but that’s the cost of doing business.

Gotta go,

Bryce
